Some experiences are so simple they catch you off guard with how good they are. Baugher’s Orchard & Farm Market in Westminster is one of those places.
This working orchard, farm market, and nearby bakery checks every fall box. Reserve your spot and grab your flannel for a romantic hayride out to the pumpkin patch, then bring home some fresh baked apple cider donuts to enjoy around the fire pit when you get back to Georges on York. Don’t forget to post your fall getaway pics and tag this family-owned and operated Carroll County mainstay. With pumpkins (and apples) from field to front porch, it doesn't get more farm-fresh-fall than this. The setting is pure Maryland countryside: fruit trees, open fields, fresh air, and an Instagramable setting.
Pro tip from us: Go right before golden hour. The light on the farm is unreal, and the memories even better!

For the History Lovers: Civil War Sites Near Taneytown
Here's something most people don't realize: Georges on York sits at the center of one of the most historically significant Civil War corridors in America. Gettysburg is 30 minutes north. The Battle of Monocacy - "The Battle That Saved Washington" - is 25 minutes south. And right here in Carroll County, hidden gems like Union Mills Homestead and the dramatic cavalry skirmish known as Corbit's Charge in Westminster tell stories that most Gettysburg visitors never know exist.

Craft Beer, Right Here: Brewery Fire

You don't even have to drive. Brewery Fire is a community-focused nano-brewery and taproom in Taneytown - right next to Thunderhead Bowl - with a geek culture aesthetic (think sci-fi, heavy metal, vintage video games) and rotating small-batch beers that punch well above their size.
New beers released regularly. Food trucks are usually on-site on weekends, or order in from the Thunderhead Bowl Grill – trust us and get the wings. It's unpretentious, local, and exactly what a Tuesday - or Thursday - night should look like.

The Scenic Train Ride: Walkersville Southern Railroad
(Walkersville, MD - 25 min)
This is the one that makes people say "I had no idea that was there."
The Walkersville Southern Railroad runs scenic excursions through the historic Monocacy Valley on what was once a Pennsylvania Railroad branch line, departing from a restored depot built in 1899. Passengers ride in vintage 1920s passenger cars or open-air flatcars through beautiful farmland, past a restored century-old lime kiln, and over the Monocacy River.
On select weekends, a fully functioning coal-fired steam engine powers the ride - with the sounds, the smell, and the smoke of a real steam train. Throughout the season, special events include a Wild West Express (complete with Jesse James train robbery and sounds of gunfire - check the website before you bring the in-laws), themed picnic trains, and evening mystery trains.
The museum itself features vintage railroad equipment and exhibits. It's an experience that feels like it belongs in a different era - which is exactly the point.

Get Competitive: NR Adventure Park
(Taneytown - 1 mile)
Couples who want to settle their differences in an appropriately dramatic fashion: NR Adventure Park is right here in Taneytown, offering 42 acres of paintball and airsoft on a top-rated outdoor course. It's Maryland's premier paintball and airsoft destination, with walk-on play available and options for private parties. Open Saturday and Sunday only.
Friendly competition aside, it's genuinely a blast - especially as a warm-weather afternoon activity before beer and wings later.

Bowl, Then Beer: Thunderhead Bowl & Grill

We know. We're recommending bowling. But Thunderhead Bowl & Grill is literally next door to Brewery Fire, which means you can bowl a few frames, walk next door for a craft beer, and call it a perfect low-key date night without ever getting back in the car.

When someone asks us "where should we go for dinner and a walk?", the answer is almost always Frederick.
Downtown Frederick is one of the best-preserved small city Main Streets in the mid-Atlantic. Independent restaurants, galleries, Carroll Creek Linear Park, and a walkable energy that Baltimore and DC residents make the drive for regularly. For dinner, the Wine Kitchen on Carroll Creek is consistently excellent - New American cuisine with local sourcing and a wine list that matches the quality of the food.
Before or after dinner, walk Carroll Creek Park. In spring it blooms beautifully; in fall it turns gold. At any time of year, it's one of the nicest evening strolls in the region.
